Prof. Dr. Marc-Oliver Pahl heads the Chair of Cybersecurity for Critical Networked Infrastructures (https://cyberni.fr/) at IMT Atlantique in Rennes, France. He is an adjunct professor of Carleton University in Canada. Marc-Oliver also heads the IoT Smart Space research team (https://s2o.net.in.tum.de/) at the Chair for Network Architectures and Services at Technical University of Munich.
Marc-Oliver is Vice President of the German Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) (https://germany.acm.org/). He heads the Future Education activities of the German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future (https://future-industry.org/).
Marc-Oliver’s research focus is on a holistic approach to cybersecurity. He works on security-by-design, anomaly detection, human-in-the-loop, and automation. His goal is making cybersecurity manageable, resulting in highly resilient and reliable systems. Marc-Oliver publishes regularly in the network and service management and security communities.
Marc-Oliver is an experienced teacher and an eLearning pioneer. He holds several teaching-related awards. Marc-Oliver developed various teaching concepts and teaches continuously at university level since 2004. Besides specialized audience, he continuously runs activities for fostering the dialog between science and society, including https://talk.cybercni.fr, https://future-iot.org, and https://being-human-with-algorithms.org.
- Professor for Cybersecurity at the Institut Mines Telecom (IMT) Atlantique, Rennes, France (since 2019)
- Head of the IoT Smart Space research team (s2o) (since 2014)
- Coordinator of Digital Teaching for the German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future (GFA) (since 2017)
- Steering committee member of the German-French Academy for the Industry of the Future (GFA) (since 2017)
- Vice-President German Chapter of the ACM (since 2020)
Marc-Oliver Pahl heads the IoT Smart Space (s2o) research team. The s2o team focuses on enablers for a secure, interoperable, resilient, and scalable Internet of Things (IoT). The s2o team currently hosts the following PhD candidates:
Since October 2019, Marc-Oliver is also Research Director at the Institut Mines Telecom in Rennes, France.
During his PhD he developed the Distributed Smart Space Orchestration System (DS2OS), which structures and facilitates the creation of services that implement Pervasive Computing scenarios. The design of DS2OS provides a basis for crowdsourced software development for smart spaces, complementing the hardware maker culture that is currently emerging with platforms such as the Arduino.
Marc-Oliver Pahl studied Informatics at the Universität Tübingen with emphasis on computer networks, computer graphics, and media science. In 2008 he joined the Network Architectures and Services group at Technische Universität München where he finished his PhD with highest honor in 2014.
In 2003, Marc-Oliver Pahl created one of the first eLearning-supported hands-on labs in Germany. He developed a special blended learning concept for supporting and motivating students in their learning. Until 2014 more than 1200 students practically acquired basic and advanced networking skills in his lab courses. In 2013 he received the Ernst Otto Fischer teaching price from Technische Universität München. In 2020 he received the TUM supervisory award for outstanding PhD supervision.
