Prof. Jessen studied electrical engineering at the Technische Universität Berlin and received his diploma in 1960. He made research work in real time radar processing and wrote his doctoral thesis on associative stores and processors (1963).

Until 1972, he was in charge of the large scale computer development with AEG-Telefunken.
In 1972, he became Professor at the Universität Hamburg (computer organisation). He joined the Technische Universität München in 1983.

He was president of DFN (German Research Network) in 1988-1990.

Vice President Technische Universität München 1994/1996.

Since December 1996 again he is president of DFN (German Research Network).

His current research interest is evaluation of parallel processing and networking.
